Causes of Ankle Sprain
It doesn't matter whether you live an active life or not. Everybody, sooner or later, gets ankle
sprains. Ankle sprain happens, to rephrase a popular saying. This doesn't mean there's nothing you can do about it.
Arming yourself with information on the causes of ankle sprain is a good first step to prevention.
Here are the top causes of ankle sprain.
Uneven Surface
This is the most common cause of ankle sprains. Suddenly stepping on uneven ground causes the
ankle to twist. Your body weight suddenly shifts to the twisted ankle exerting pressure on the ligaments of your
ankle.
Not Warming Up
Not warming up makes your ligaments more susceptible to ankle sprains. Not warming up before an
athletic game increases the chances of getting an ankle sprain three-fold.
Previous Injury
If you sprained your ankle before, there's a good chance of getting a re-injury. A history of
ankle sprain means you have to take steps to make your ligaments, tendons and muscle stronger to avoid re-injury.
Being extra-careful when running or walking on uneven surfaces helps.
Not Wearing the Correct Shoes
Even if you're not a professional athlete or rarely engage in athletic activities, it's always a
good idea to buy shoes that will protect you from injury. Don't buy shoes simply because they look good. Make sure
that they can protect your ankles. Spend a few extra dollars if necessary. While more expensive doesn't always mean
better, spend on shoes that provide adequate protection.
Being Out of Shape
Damage to the ligaments, either over-stretching or tearing, is what we call sprain. Exercising
your ankles will make the ligaments in your ankles stronger and more flexible. The tendons and muscles in your legs
and feet must also remain in good shape as they provide support the ligaments in your ankles.
However careful you may be, you can never be 100% sure that you won't get an ankle sprain. The important thing
is to be ready. Strengthen your ligaments, muscles and tendons by exercising them for a few minutes daily or
whenever you're working out. A healthy diet rich in protein and calcium will also help.
